Health Education

Our Health Education Department offers numerous ongoing classes on a variety of health related topics, with no fee for High Desert Medical Group members. Our mission is to provide quality educational programs to empower our members to prevent, and manage disease in an effort to improve their health and quality of life.

Living Well With Arthritis

An interactive program to help participants learn how to manage arthritis. Learn about the types of arthritis, treatment options, symptom and pain management techniques, and diet and lifestyle changes that can help you live well with arthritis.

“Baby and Me” Prenatal Program

This program provides members personal support by a licensed nurse throughout pregnancy. Educational workshops help participants understand each stage of pregnancy, healthy eating, safe exercises, labor, delivery, breastfeeding and newborn care.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Class

Learn about the basics of COPD, including causes, risk factors, symptoms, treatment options, managing flare ups, goal setting and self-care guidelines.

Diabetes/Prediabetes

Self-Management – Session 1
A two session workshop that provides participants with the information and the tools needed to manage prediabetes and diabetes. Session one provides an overview of prediabetes and diabetes, including causes, risk factors, symptoms, treatment options, lifestyle changes and self-care guidelines.

Healthy Eating – Session 2
Session two covers basic nutrition principles, healthy eating guidelines, how to read food labels, serving sizes, meal planning, plate method, basic carbohydrate counting and goal setting.

Diabetes Empowerment Education Workshop (DEEP)
The DEEP program is designed to provide participants with tools and skills needed to better manage diabetes and live healthier, happier lives. This program encourages lifestyle changes and provides comprehensive diabetes education. Sessions cover: understanding the human body and diabetes, complications, risk factors, self-monitoring, nutrition, exercise, medications, goal setting and stress management. Participants must be able to attend six weekly two hour
workshops.

Healthy Heart – Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Heart Failure Management

This workshop provides attendees with the information and tools needed to manage high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart failure. Learn about high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart failure, including causes, risk factors, symptoms, treatments, lifestyle and self-care guidelines.

Healthier Living Workshop

This award-winning Stanford University program is designed to provide participants with tools and skills needed to better manage chronic health conditions and live healthier, happier lives. Sessions cover: techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, appropriate use of medications, communication, nutrition, decision making, problem solving, how to evaluate new treatments, and goal setting. *Participants must have at least one chronic condition, and be able to attend six weekly 2 ½ hour workshops.

Smoking Cessation Classes – Preparing to Quit

The Smoking Cessation Program supports a tobacco user’s ability to quit through understanding addiction, identifying triggers, and learning to cope and stay quit. Sessions cover: Benefits of quitting, motivation, stages of change, recognizing triggers, understanding addiction and withdrawal symptoms, coping strategies, stress management, nutrition, exercise and goal setting.

Healthy Weight for Life…

Healthy Weight for Life…
This six month program focuses on overall health and wellbeing and provides participants with the information, skills and support needed to make healthy lifestyle changes. Sessions cover: Basic nutrition principles, portion control, meal planning, how to read food labels, grocery shopping, eating out, exercise, stress management, problem solving and goal setting.
**The program offers an on-going monthly support group with focused topics each month.

Getting Ready for Surgery – Bariatric Weight Management Program
*A referral from the program medical director is required.

Preparing for Joint Replacement or Spine Surgery

*A Referral from a health care provider is required. This class provides attendees with an understanding of what to expect before, during and after spine surgery to improve surgical outcomes and patient experience.

    Everyone Can Quit Smoking. Offers free telephone counseling, online help in six languages, a texting program, email updates and self-help materials. Free nicotine patches are available to eligible callers.
